.We’ll meet in the lobby of our trip-start hotel at 1pm and head off for a traditional Peruvian lunch at a local restaurant. Lunch is the main meal of the day here in Peru. This is an excellent opportunity to carbo load for the missions ahead! We’ll leave the afternoon fairly flexible – to get to know Cusco with or without your guide, put your bike together, or whatever. We make sure there’s time today to acclimatize, but we’re also here to show you the sights, or help with whatever you want to do. We strongly recommend you take it easy today and make sure you hydrate as you adjust to the 10,800 ft altitude. If you have the time to arrive a couple of days early, this really helps with acclimatization. There’s plenty to do in Cusco and we can help make arrangements. Overnight in Cusco. (L)
We’re heading to Pisac, 30km from Cusco and 600 meters lower. It’s the gateway to the Sacred Valley of the Inca. To get there, we ride on paved road and an easy single track – a looping, scenic descent that’s a lot of fun for any rider. After some time wandering around Pisac’s famous artesania (handcraft) market and charming cobbled alleyways, the riding resumes along a level stretch of the valley, surrounded by spectacular scenery, to our camp site. (B/D)
This day is packed with grand mountain scenery and world-class mountain biking. In the morning we’ll drive to the Amparaes Pass for an easy descent on a gravel road or single track into the remote and beautiful Lares Valley. This is rugged country where farmers have used the same traditional techniques to work the land for centuries. They still venerate the surrounding “Apu” deities that inhabit the surrounding creeks, precipitous slopes and jagged ice peaked mountains. There’s some fairly easy track and plenty of coasting along the road today, through an ever greener and steeper river valley. We’ll spend the night camping at the Baños Termales de Lares – naturally occurring hot springs perched on the side of a river. Tonight we’ll enjoy a well-earned soak in the healing mineral waters as we admire the millions of stars above – the end of a perfect day. Camp at Lares Hot Springs. (B/L/D)
We pack the bikes and ourselves back into our vehicle for a scenic drive back up to Amparaes Pass and onto one of the world’s greatest off-road descents over a llama worn trail, along a winding river gorge and over a speedy gravel back road into the town of Calca, where we’ll stop for a late lunch. Then we saddle back up for more cycling through the verdant Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, the oldest continually occupied town in the Americas. The town’s layout has remained basically the same since the time of the Inca, with much of the original construction. (B)
This is one of the best day’s riding on this trip: A delightful, gentle descent through farmland, villages, and past beautiful lakes and Inca ruins. It’s a day you will never forget, culminating with a tour of Salineras – a still-working ancient salt factory that’s as beautifully surreal as it is fascinating. You’ll want to have your camera ready to capture the patchwork of colored pools twinkling under the sun. It’s one of our favorite Inca sites. Later we’ll board a train to Aguas Calientes, the town beneath Machu Picchu, where we’ll spend the night. (B)
We’ll spend today exploring the words-fail-me glory that is Machu Picchu – one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. We’ll have a guided tour (a good one, with no numbers on sticks, we promise), plus time to explore on our own or climb for breathtaking views up one or more stunning nearby peaks: Huayna Picchu, Putucusi or Machu Picchu mountain itself. Later we’ll return by scenic train back to Cusco. (B/L)
We’ll help you with any last minute shopping and get you to the airport. Thanks for spending this time with us – hasta pronto! (B)
